Water for a aquarium, specially a marine or seawater aquarium, requires special engineered and treated seawater. Natural seawater requires several steps pretreatment, due to its fluctuations in salinity (locally very high) and possible contamination by pathogens. Dilution with ultra pure water, micro filtration and sterilization is required to make natural seawater suitable for safe marine aquariums.

Artificial seawater (ASW) can be produced by using a special sea water salt mixture and adjustment of the salinity by the use of clean freshwater. In special cases the production of custom salt formulation might be required, where for instance delicate corals are to be kept.
